I know I probably shouldn’t, but most mornings I do it a few times before I start my day. Sometimes I only do it once, but those mornings are rare. I know the dog must hate it. I know I’d be better off if I could just get going on a daily basis without doing it.
The snooze button. I must hit it. A lot.
I’d get more out of sleeping straight through for 28 minutes than I would getting up, hitting the snooze button, and getting back to bed for seven minutes four times a morning, wouldn’t I? I’m not even sleeping, I don’t think, for those seven minutes between snooze button mashings. Instead, I bury my head, out of view of the clocks, and think about various things that I need to do: grocery shopping, the laundry, and the cute new girl down the hall. Sure, that’s productive, but not as productive as half an hour of uninterrupted sleep. And the dog knows that I take him out first thing in the morning, so whenever I get out of bed, he jumps up ready to go, only to have to lay back down when I hit the snooze button and get back in bed. I don’t think he’s realized that one urgent and frustrated grine (growl + whine) will get me out of bed faster than the alarm clock going off. Let’s hope he doesn’t figure that one out.
So, despite the fact that I’m convinced it doesn’t really help, I still opt to get “seven more minutes” of sleep that isn’t really even sleep. Despite the fact that I put my alarm clock across the room so that I’d be less likely to get back in bed if I have to get up, step around a potty-expecting puppy, and walk to hit the button, I still do it. Why? Because I know that even if I got an extra 28 minutes of sleep uninterrupted, I’d still hit the snooze button a few times when I woke up.

I snooze TWO alarms every morning. I win.
You use two alarms? Are they staggered, or do they go off at the same time? I can see the merits of both options to be honest.
I do it for nearly an hour most mornings.
An hour, I-66!
Yeah, but you have to rest every 7 to 9 minutes.
I completely agree with you on this… I do the same thing.
I can’t remember the last time I just got out of bed without it.
I prefer to think of my snooze alarms as options.
*5:45 alarm*: Get up, take the dogs for a walk, take a shower, pour myself some cereal, get dressed, go to work.
*6:00*: Get up, take the dogs for a walk, shower, dress, go to work.
*6:15*: Get up, put the dogs in the backyard, take a shower, dress, go to work.
*6:30* Get up, go to work. Plan on coming home during lunch to let the dogs out. Apply extra deoderant in the car.
You say “extra” as if I wear any at all.
Wait, what?
If I ever hit the snooze button, I have to do it RIGHT when the alarm goes off, before the dog wakes up. If he wakes up, it’s all over – a total whinefest until I get out of bed and let him out.
Oh, I know the whinefest. I also know he doesn’t really mean it until he whines while he rests his chin on the bed while staring me in the face.
An extra 28 minutes of sleep wouldn’t provide near the same psychological benefit of believing that you’re more rested than you would’ve been had you gotten up 7, 14, 21 or 28 minutes ago.
I used to do the snooze button, but I’ve stopped over the past year. I think it’s the first time since high school I’ve ever had a routine where I had to wake up at the same time every day. But now I wake up at 8am on weekends. NOT COOL. Obviously I need to be more of a delinquent…
