Mugging. For the camera.

This weekend was one of a lot of booze and a lot of booze. It culminated in a day-long drinkfest yesterday that included one event in particular.

The Scene was 7th Street. Outside, a girl, flanked by a man holding a camera and a man holding a purple boombox with an iPod connected to it, was walking down the block over and over appearing to sing and making apparently rehearsed arm and hand movements. The camera guy would walk a few times in front of her looking at her with the camera at eye level, then a few times on one side or the other, then in front of her with the camera looking up at her from below. It looked like she was shooting a very low-budget music video. Ever curious, I went outside to investigate. The boombox was playing a song, and the girl was lipsynching as she walked, as one would do for a music video. I reported my findings, and very quickly a plan was hatched.

My partner in crime (anonymous unless she chooses to self-identify) and I decided to hang out on the street, and when the girl walked by we’d step out behind her and mimic her movements in front of the camera. We took our places and waited for the camera to roll. The camera dude was utilizing a tactic where he circled the girl as she walked, so when we stepped out behind her he didn’t see us right away. We made it a few steps at a range of just a few feet, but once we were in frame, the camera guy spotted us, stopped rolling, and told us that we had to get outta there. Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you’d rented this block for the day. Our bad. At least the onlookers thought it was funny.

All in all, I’m saddened to think that we’re not going to be in the video for the song and singer that I’d never heard of or seen before. I guess our 15 minutes of fame will have to wait for another day.

Mugging. For the camera.

  1. I will out myself on this one, because it was truly an awesome music video and you can all say you knew me when.

    • It’s a shame they didn’t wait a little longer to start shooting. I bet we would’ve looked even better in the snow.

  2. Haha maybe you jumped into some backrgound shots without him noticing. Keep checking the latest YouTube sensations in case she makes it big lol.

    • I was definitely in the background when I was scoping it out originally, looking unassuming while leaning up against the front of the building. Really I think the best shot was the one we stole.

  3. She was singing with an IPOD?

  4. This reminds me of the time I was once in the background of a Tara Reid movie. I was like, “Who?” There wasn’t even a purple boombox there. Lame.
